iPhone General Set-up Tips

• Change the name that iTunes give your phone during the setup process by tapping the name next to the iPhone icon in iTunes and just retype anything you want.

• Prevent SMS messages popping up on screen, even when your phone is locked, by turning off the SMS preview in the Passcode Lock page.

iPhone Connection Settings Tips

• Turn Wi-fi and bluetooth off when you are not using them -- they consume power even when not in use and by switching off you save that power and make battery power last longer.

iPhone Maintenance Tips

• Avoid your iPhone over-heating; keep iPhones out of direct sunlight and away from heat generators. Apple claim iPhones work best (fastest) between zero and 35 degrees Centigrade.

• Fully drain and then fully charge batteries once a month to improve their performance.

iPhone Contact Management Tips

• Mac users can choose to automatically add web addresses associated with their contacts to their iPhone bookmarks in Safari -- under the bookmarks tab, check the options that suit you.

• Your iPhone automatically lists your contacts in alphabetical order. You can change this by clicking settings on the main screen and choosing iPhone.

• Some phone numbers require that you pause before entering certain digits -- this is true when you want a particular extension or are asked to enter a passcode. To add a pause to a number insert an # symbol then select "Pause."

• Your own personal iPhone telephone number is right at the top of your contacts list.

iPhone Tips on Making and Managing Calls

• You can make emergency calls with your iPhone even if it has no sim card or your sim card is not activated.

• The iPhone effectively has two lines available for calls which means you can answer calls while you are on a call (this also allows you to do other things too...)

• Voicemail messages are saved for 30 days, starting from when you first listen to them, whether you delete them or not.

• When you make a call via the Internet you need to enter in the international dialing code. On this basis, it makes sense to add the international dialing code when you add numbers to your contact list.

iPhone Tips on SMS Texting

• Remember that you can tap phone numbers, addresses, web addresses, and email addresses which are sent to you by SMS, your iPhone will respond appropriately by opening the relevant application.

iPhone Web Browsing Tips

• If you find yourself struggling with typing whist surfing the web, turn the iPhone on its side whilst using Safari -- the iPhone keyboard will turn too, with larger keys that make typing easier.

• You can copy Firefox bookmarks to the iPhone but you cannot copy iPhone bookmarks to Firefox.

• Tap and hold links in email or anywhere to reveal the full URL address.

• If you find yourself struggling with typing whist surfing the web, turn the iPhone on its side whilst using Safari -- the iPhone keyboard will turn too, with larger keys that make typing easier.
